Powder Flame Spray Gun
The powder flame spray gun process uses an identical technique of wire flame spray, except that the wire feedstock is replaced with powder. The method is essentially the spraying of molten material onto a surface to supply a coating. The material in powder form is melted during a flame (oxy-acetylene or hydrogen most commonly) to make a fine spray. When the spray connects the substrate, the fine molten droplets rapidly solidify, forming a coating. This flame spray gun process, when carried out correctly, is termed a “cold process” because the substrate temperature is often kept relatively low during processing avoiding damage, metallurgical changes, and distortion to the substrate material.
Advantages of Powder Flame Spray Process
The main advantage of the powder flame spray process is that a much wider range of materials is easily processed into powder form, giving a bigger choice of coatings. In certain kinds of guns, the heat-fusible material is initially fed through the gun in powdered or wire form. Guns that are so furnished with material to be sprayed in powdered form are referred to as "powder-type flame spray guns." The powdered or wire material is typically called a flame spray powder and is usually of relatively small particle size, as an example, below about 140 mesh U.S. Standard screen size. The thermal spray gun utilizes a combustion or plasma flame and in many guns, the powder or wire is fed to the gun or into the gun's flame entrained during a carrier gas. so as to get high-quality coatings, it's necessary to accurately control the speed of powder fed through the gun and to maintain a uniform rate for given spray conditions. In powder, particularly the fine powder is used as flame spray powder, has proven to be a difficult material to handle and feed a carrier gas at the specified uniform rate. Powder flame spraying involves the heat-softening or melting of a heat-fusible material, like metal or ceramic, and therefore the propelling or spraying of the softened material against the surface to be coated.
